BIBLE IN A YEAR: Jeremiah 51-52 and Hebrews 9
BIBLE IN A YEAR: Jeremiah 51-52 and Hebrews 9
SCRIPTURE READING
Luke 1:46-55 (NIV); And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me—holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”
The Scriptures call this “Mary’s Song”. As is consistent to those who desire to serve and obey God, Mary’s submission to the role bestowed upon her led her into greater joy! Interestingly, when thinking about the virgin birth, there is an inkling to say “Oh, poor Mary” and dwell upon the terror of her plight. But that was just not the case. Mary was the Lord’s servant, and though she was no doubt looked at with disdain by those who saw her as an adulteress, there was nothing impure about her situation. And as she surrendered to the Lord’s work, fear and anxiety was replaced with peace and inexpressible joy, along with prophetic revelation of what God was doing!
“Oh poor me” is a common woe, whether spoken or felt. We look at our difficult surroundings and unhappy circumstances and wish only to be removed from them. IF ONLY things would change. But WHAT IF God had an incredible plan in the works? What if what was happening to you was actually a gift? Or, what if God is attempting to take what is terrible and use it for His glory?
PRAYER and MEDITATION
1. Spend at least ten minutes meditating on Mary’s song, asking the Lord for wisdom to understand it fully. What jumps out at you?
2. What does God want to say to you personally through it?
3. Ask God to reveal areas of complaining and discontentment in your life? How is this causing you to sin? Confess as He leads.
4. Put your hands out before you and ask for a filling of the Holy Spirit. Ask that you would be full of joy and submission.
