NEW TESTAMENT READING PLAN: Colossians 1-2
SCRIPTURE READING

1 Kings 19:11-13a (NIV); The LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the
presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind
tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in
the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake.
After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came
a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and
stood at the mouth of the cave.

Elijah knew the voice of God. How many of us would have assumed the presence of the
Lord to come through the earthquake or the fire? Elijah was attuned. We need to be patient
and wait for the Lord. Scripture holds much promise for those who do. We will receive an
inheritance, we will find salvation, and we will not be put to shame. If we move ahead of
the Spirit, shame will be inevitable. Making unfounded prophesies, speaking out against
authority, making a bad decision because you didn’t confirm what you thought you heard
from the Lord – all bring shame. But when our hope is in God, and when we are patient to
know His will and to act accordingly we will be lifted up.
The Lord is full of promises, and He is not slow in keeping them. He is faithful and
trustworthy. Let us be faithful in the waiting.

PRAYER and MEDITATION
1. How has God encouraged, uplifted and sustained you in the last month? Thank Him for
what He has done for you.
2. When has impatience caused you shame? When has waiting for the Lord proved to be the
right thing to do?
3. Spend some time just waiting for the presence of the Lord today. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill
you and to meet you in your devotional time. Don’t allow yourself to conjure up expectations.
Just allow the Lord to meet you in His own way.
