The Transcendence of God
Psalm 33:13 From heaven the LORD looks down and sees all mankind. (NIV)
The pocket dictionary of theological terms tells us that transcendence is the “attribute of God that
refers to being wholly and distinctly separate from creation (although always actively involved
in and with it as well). The declaration that God is transcendent means that God is “above” the
world and comes to creation from “beyond.” During the medieval era God’s transcendence was
especially emphasized, as is evident in the architecture of the great gothic cathedrals with their
high, arched ceilings that lift one’s gaze upward.” God is high above all other beings, yet we must
not compare God with any other as we compare the mountain with the grain of sand. We must
not think of God as the highest in an ascending order of beings, starting with the single celled
creatures and going up from the fish to the birds to the animals, to man, then angels and then
God. God forever stand apart, He is as high above an archangel as above a caterpillar for the
distance between the archangel and the caterpillar is finite. The gulf between the archangel and
God is infinite. Think about that for a moment or two. That is how exalted God is, we can’t even
think to compare Him with any of His created beings, and we can’t even to think to imagine the
gap between us and Him. That’s how great the God who loves you is!
PRAYER and MEDITATION
1. Ask the Lord to give you a word, thought or picture about His greatness.
2. Pray that the Canadian church would grow to know and understand the greatness of God
and that this would motivate people toward evangelism.
3. Thank the Lord for His involvement in our lives, that even though He is high above all, He
still loves you.
