The Love of God
Ephesians 3:17-19 17 …that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18may have strength to
comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19and to
know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of
God. (ESV)
There is nothing in us that could attract the love of One as holy and just as God. Yet, God has
declared His unchanging love for us in Jesus Christ. There is nothing in us that can win His
love, yet nothing in the universe can prevent Him from loving us. His love is uncaused and
underserved. It is God Himself that is the reason for the love that we receive from Him. We
must pray that we will learn to believe and experience the intensity of the love that He has for
us. This is an eternal love and when we begin to feel it, it quiets our troubled hearts and brings
us to peace as we learn to trust not in what we are but in what He has declared Himself to
be. Because God is eternal, His love has no beginning or end. Because God is infinite, His
love has no limit; because He is holy, His love is pure and spotless – it has no wrong motives.
Because He is immense, His love is incomprehensibly vast. We do not know and we may never
know what love is, but we can know how it manifests itself. Love wills the good of all and never
wills harm or evil to any. Fear is the painful emotion that arises at the thought that we may be
harmed or made to suffer. We can never conquer fear without removing the causes. As long as
we are in the hands of chance we have every reason to be afraid. But to know the love of God
and to enter into the secret place of leaning on the arm of the Beloved – this and only this can
cast out fear. God is love and God is sovereign. His love disposes Him to desire our everlasting
welfare and His sovereignty enables Him to secure it. That is God’s love for you today!
PRAYER and MEDITATION
1. Ask the Lord to help you believe and experience the intensity of the love that God has for
you today.
2. Ask the Lord to show you a fear that you have. Then, give Him permission to show you
His love for you in that area. Ask Him how His love and sovereignty are working together
in that area in order to secure your welfare.
