Foundations: The Gospel of John - Day 8

Chapter six begins with the miraculous feeding of the 5,000 by the Sea of Galilee.  The disciples were only able to collect five loaves and two small fish to feed the crowd (v. 9).  Nevertheless, after distributing the food they were able to gather 12 baskets of leftovers (v. 13).  Seeing this, the people believed that Christ was the Prophet they were expecting (v. 14).  After seeing that the people were ready to force Him to be their king, Jesus slipped away to the mountains to be by Himself.  When the evening came the disciples started across the Sea on their own.  A storm arose and they saw Jesus walking towards them on the water (v. 19).  When He entered the boat, immediately the boat arrived at their destination (v.21).

JOURNALING AND PRAYER
1.   This is not the first time God miraculously fed His people.  Read Exodus 16:1-12. What similarities do you note in these two passages of Scripture?
2.   Notice how the disciples got impatient and how they got into the boat and headed across without Jesus.  As Christians, we often go ahead and do our own thing and ask for God’s blessing on our plans instead of waiting on Him and finding out what His plans are.  Ask the Lord to show you a situation in your life right now where this is true.  Then ask Him what He wants you to do about it.
3.   Spend some time in thanksgiving prayer, praising God for His goodness and love for you.  Ask Him to show you 5-10 things you can be thankful for today.
