Bible Poetry Reading Plan: Job 35-36
Is Heaven Boring?

Psalm 16:11 In your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
(NKJV)

Will heaven be boring? This question is often asked by people who fear Heaven. We seem to have
the wrong notion that Hell is the place where all the fun people hang around together, shoot pool
and joke with friends whereas Heaven is a boring place filled with clouds and harps. This could not
be farther from the truth. Hell is a place of torment and isolation, where friendships and good times
do not exist. Hell will be deadly boring. Everything good, enjoyable, refreshing, fascinating and
interesting is derived from God. Without God there is nothing interesting to do. In the presence of
God there is no boredom, there is only joy and pleasure! We won’t be bored in Heaven! Our belief
that Heaven is boring betrays a heresy – that God is boring. There’s no greater non-sense. Our
desire for pleasure and the experience of joy comes directly from God’s hand. Are we so arrogant
as to think that fun was invented by humans? People wrongfully assume that sin is exciting and
righteousness is boring. We’ve fallen for the devil’s lies. His most basic strategy, the same one he
employed with Adam and Eve, it to make us believe that sin brings fulfillment. However, in reality, sin robs us of fulfillment. Sin doesn’t make life interesting; it makes life empty. Sin’s emptiness leads
to boredom. Where there’s fulfillment, where there’s beauty, when we see God as He truly is – an
endless river of fascination – boredom is simply impossible. Those who believe that excitement can’t
exist without sin are thinking with sin-poisoned minds. Drug addicts are convinced that without their
drug they can’t live happy lives. Yet everyone can see that drugs make them miserable. Freedom
from sin will mean freedom to be what God intended, freedom to find far greater joy in everything.
Heaven will be filled with joy and eternal pleasures.

PRAYER and MEDITATION
1. Have you ever thought that Heaven will be boring? Confess that you have believed this lie,
asking the Lord to forgive you.
2. Everything good, enjoyable, refreshing, fascinating and interesting is derived from God. What
does this tell you about the kind of relationship that you can have with God right now? Do you
have this kind of relationship with Him? How can you grow in feeling this way about God?
3. Pray that the church would recognize the emptiness of sin and that they would be motivated to
pursue the God who has pleasure at His right hand.
