Bible Poetry Reading Plan: Proverbs 2-3
Living in Light of Heaven
Philippians 3:20-21 20 But our citizenship is in Heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord
Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like His glorious body, by the power that
enables Him even to subject all things to Himself.
C.S. Lewis said, “I must keep alive in myself the desire for my true country, which I shall not find
till after death; I must never let it get snowed under or turned aside; I must make it the main object
of life to press on to that country and to help others to do the same.” Our real home is in Heaven
and eventually on the New Earth. Have you ever gone on a trip and gotten homesick? Have you
ever craved your mom’s or wife’s special home cooked meals? Home brings comfort, it’s the place
where we can be ourselves, sit back and relax. When you’re on a long trip then coming come
brings a sense of anticipation as you get closer and closer. For some people the thought of home
brings back bad memories but our true home in Heaven will only have good qualities. It will never
burn down, flood or be blown away. Randy Alcorn says, “Home isn’t just a metaphor for Heaven;
it describes a physical, actual place built by Jesus. It’s a place you will share with loved ones and
friends, a place of fond familiarity, comfort and refuge, a place of marvelous smells and tastes, fine
foods, and great conversation; a place of contemplation and interaction, and expressing the gifts
and passions that God has given us. It’ll be a place of unprecedented freedom and adventure.”
The many vague stereotypes of Heaven actually hurt us far more then we realize. They diminish
our anticipation of going to Heaven and living on the New Earth they keep us from living like they
are our real home.
PRAYER and MEDITATION
1. Have you ever thought about Heaven and the New Earth as being your real home? Why
would this thinking help you grow in righteousness and holiness?
2. Read Randy Alcorn’s quote, written above. Is this the sort of place where you would want to
spend all of eternity?
3. Pray that the Lord would impress on your heart the idea that Heaven and the New Earth is
your real home and that your desire to go there would grow.
