Bible Poetry Reading Plan: Proverbs 4
Cultivate a Love for Heaven
Colossians 1:3-5 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for
you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5
because of the hope laid up for you in Heaven. (ESV)
A.W. Tozer wrote, “In nature, everything moves in the direction of its hungers. In the spiritual
world it is not otherwise. We gravitate toward our inward longings, provided of course that those
longings are strong enough to move us.” We must spend our lives cultivating our love for Heaven
by meditating on what Scripture says about Heaven, praying for this desire and through talking to
others, including our kids, about Heaven. When we begin to focus on Heaven then our present
lives take on a whole new focus – our earthly lives begin to matter and our conversations with
loved ones matter. Work, leisure, creativity and intellectual stimulation matter because they are all
eternal. What God tells us about our future lives enable us to interpret our past and serve Him in
our present. As Christians, it’s time to stop acting as if Heaven was a myth, an impossible dream,
a relentlessly dull meeting, or an unimportant distraction from real life. We need to see Heaven for
what it is made for. If we do, we’ll embrace it with contagious joy, excitement and anticipation and
we’ll influence many to want to go there too!
PRAYER and MEDITATION
1. How does your enthusiasm or lack of enthusiasm for Heaven affect those around you and
their desire to want to go to Heaven?
2. Ask the Lord to show you ways that you can grow in cultivating a longing for Heaven.
3. Pray that all that you do (your work, leisure, creativity, intellectual stimulation, etc.) would all
take on an eternal focus. Ask the Lord to show you what that would look like for you.
4. Spend some time praising God and thanking Him for helping you focus your life on what
matters, on the eternal!
