THE LONGING FOR GREATNESS
SCRIPTURE READING
Matthew 20:26-27 (NKJV) Whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave.
Matthew 18:4 (NKJV) Whoever humbles himself…is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Most people are driven by the one chance that they get to make it in life so they try to maximize every opportunity, but seeking the highest station in life and living as to not miss every opportunity couldn’t be more wrong. Achieving greatness in the eyes of your peers is not the Kingdom perspective.
This life is a short internship that prepares us to rule and reign in eternity with Jesus. Our primary ministry assignment in this lifetime is to walk in love and meekness. The ministries that we will have in the age to come will be determined by the choices that we make in this lifetime. Where or how we serve in the next age will be determined by how well we forgo greatness on this side of glory in order to be all we can be in the next age. We are meant to be great, but not in this age, but in the age to come. This greatness will be determined by how we developed in meekness and humility in this age.
PRAYER AND MEDITATION
1. Have you ever thought about the link between your humility and meekness in this life and your assignment to rule and reign with Jesus in the next age? How does this make you feel?
2. Does it surprise you that Jesus’ road to greatness requires being a humble servant? How did Jesus demonstrate this in His years on earth?
3. Spend some time praying that God will grow you in love and humility. Thank Jesus for revealing these truths to you and ask Him to help deepen your understanding of these Kingdom principles.
