BIBLE IN A YEAR: Isaiah 36-37 and Colossians 2

THE LONGING FOR FASCINATION

SCRIPTURE READING
2 Samuel 13:15 (NIV) Then Amnon hated her with intense hatred. In fact, he hated her
more than he had loved her. Amnon said to her, “Get up and get out!”

The Bible tells us the story of Amnon, who was sinfully fascinated with Tamar. He was convinced that she would meet his needs so he plotted to get her and then forced himself upon her. Once he had her, the pursuit was gone, what he craved so much became repulsive to him so he cast her aside.

We do the same with entertainment today. Once we experience the movie, the concert, whatever…it’s over, and we feel all the more dissatisfied. Our society is filled with theatres – temples of false fascination. Today’s blockbuster is forgotten in a week, as we move on to the next thing that we yearn to be fascinated with. Entertainment is a false fascination, one that is stealing the fascination that belongs to God. We must remove these influences from our lives but we must go one step further, we must have our longing for fascination fulfilled in our relationship with God. It’s not the longing that is wrong but the way that we have gone about having it fulfilled. No matter what is fascinating your heart now, it is far less valuable or lasting than the superior pleasure of Jesus.

PRAYER  MEDITATION
1. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you the extent to which entertainment has a grip on you. Are you willing to remove these influences from your life in order to learn to be fascinated with God?

2. Ask God to help you fulfill your longing for fascination the way that He wants you to. Ask Him to help you choose Him over the pleasure of the world, which fades so quickly.

3. Thank Him for His forgiveness and for the love He has for you!
