New Testament Reading Plan: Revelations 19-22
SCRIPTURE READING
1 Kings 3:7, 9 (NIV); “Now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my
father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties… So give
your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and
wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?”
How thrilling it would be to hear God say, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” These
are the words that Solomon heard, and of all the possibilities in the world, of all the temptations
of the human heart, he asked for wisdom. As the son and successor of the great King David,
dubbed to rule over Yahweh’s people, Solomon was overwhelmed by the task ahead of him. No
gift would satisfy his needs as the gift of wisdom could. And God was pleased with His selfless
request.
Having a true worshipper as a role model, Solomon knew God to be holy, powerful and
sovereign. He feared the Lord and trusted the wisdom of the Almighty God. With the fear of the
Lord comes a deep-rooted faith in the wisdom of God, and we are able to entrust ourselves to
that wisdom. Our prayers, then, will be full of faith in the One that we trust. When we pursue the
Lord wholeheartedly, our heart’s desires will move into alignment with His will. In humility and
reverence we will come before God saying, “I am only a little child and do not know how to carry
out my duties! Give your servant a discerning heart to do your will!”

PRAYER and MEDITATION
1. Do you doubt God’s character in any way? Do you doubt His trustworthiness and His
wisdom? Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any areas of unbelief and doubt. Take time to think
about your responses to the different situations in your life. True reliance and belief will be
seen in our thoughts and actions. Bring these before the Lord, confessing them and asking
for increased faith.
2. In what area do you find yourself a little child who does not know how to carry out their
duties? Ask God to give you a discerning heart to know His will.
