This passage of
Scripture continues the description of a godly life that you read about
yesterday. Jesus never ceases to set the bar high for us. Yesterday’s passage
showed some of the ways God offers us help. Today’s passage reveals another key
in living wholehearted, godly lives: knowledge that we’re fighting a spiritual
battle. Just as we serve a real God who desires our success, we also face a
real enemy who desires our failure. While Christians shouldn’t be afraid of the
evil one, we must acknowledge that we cannot have victory over him on our own.
We must “be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might” (6:10). God is
all-powerful and victorious. We can have triumph over the attacks of the enemy
when we lean on God’s strength, using the tools and strategies Jesus gives us.
Prayer
and Meditation
1.
Based
on Ephesians 6:5-8, how is your work ethic? Ask God to show you how you can
improve in this area over the next week. (Note: If you’re not working you can
apply this question to other areas of life, such as school or volunteering.)
2.
The
armour of God is such a common passage of Scripture that we often skim over it,
not pausing to apply it to our lives. Spend some time thinking about each of
the pieces of armour mentioned in Ephesians 6:13-17 and asking God questions
(for example: How does Jesus’ peace make us ready for spiritual battles? How
does faith extinguish the enemy’s attacks?)
3.
Godly
marriages reveal the power of Jesus to the world. If you’re married, spend some
time praying for yourself and your spouse, that you would better reflect
Ephesians 5:22-33. If you’re not married, ask God to show you which marriages
you can pray for today.
