Foundations November 14, 2012

Read Colossians 1-2
In your journal, write down the things that stick out to you from today’s Bible reading. Respond to what God shows you as you feel led (confession, thanksgiving, etc.)
The letter to the church at Colossae fits the theme of many New Testament letters: it was written to combat heresy in the church. Colossians is a perfect reflection of why Christians fight false doctrine. It is not so that the person teaching true doctrine might be exalted. It is not so that false doctrine might be replaced with religious practices or a set of ideas that people agree with on paper but fail to hide in their hearts. No, the Church is called to fight false doctrine for one reason alone: that the true Saviour might be glorified. One of the most beautiful descriptions of Christ in the Bible is found in Colossians 1:13-20. It is no mistake that the Holy Spirit revealed such a moving picture of Jesus in the same letter He refutes false doctrine. Jesus is the Truth and only by gazing on Him can we rid ourselves of lies.

Prayer and Mediation
1.      Meditate on Colossians 1:13-20. Ask Jesus to reveal Himself to you through this passage and write down anything you receive. Thank Jesus for being counted worthy of knowing Him.
2.      Ask God to increase your desire to know Him personally.
3.      Paul had a burden for churches he hadn’t even met face to face. Spend time praying the blessings from Colossians 2: 2-8 over the Canadian Church. We may not know every church personally, but we can still partner with God in seeing the believers of our nation rise up and glorify Jesus Christ.
