Repeatedly we find
that the Scriptures call us to holy living in light of Christ. We are to have
nothing to do with sin. When the Bible says nothing it doesn’t mean, “only a
little bit” or “you can only sin if you REALLY want to.” When the Bible says we
are to have nothing to do with sin, it actually means nothing. We are called to
abandon our former nature and replace it with the new life Jesus teaches us. He
guides us into a life marked by compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness,
patience and love (3: 12-14). It is urgent that we gain a deeper knowledge of
Christ’s sacrifice. Only through this can we hope to reflect Him to the world
around us.
Prayer
and Meditation
1. Review Colossians 3:5
and 8-9. Ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you about how you’re doing in these
areas. Confess as necessary and ask for His grace to live in a manner worthy of
being called a Christian.
2. We are commanded to
“let the word of Christ dwell richly in [our] hearts” (3:16). Over the next
week, memorize Colossians 3:23-25. As you review the words, plant them in your
heart by applying them to your situation. This will not only help you memorize
the verses, it will also help you live them out.
3. Take a few minutes to
pray for the persecuted church. In many regions of the world (China, the Middle
East, parts of Africa, etc.) it is illegal to share the news of Jesus. Pray that
God lead and safeguard believers in these areas. Ask that He would open doors
to the spread of the gospel (4:2-3).
