Ephesians 3 contains
one of the most well-known prayers in Scripture (v 16-21). While studying this
prayer it can be easy to focus solely on the words and neglect to study why the
Holy Spirit chose to include this prayer in Scripture. Verse 14 says, “For this
reason I kneel before the Father”. This phrase indicates that Paul’s reason for
praying is found directly before the prayer itself. The first half of Ephesians
describes Paul’s ministry to the Gentiles. This prayer comes out of His heart
for the Gentiles to know the “unsearchable riches of Christ” (v 8). It is interesting that prayer bookends the
section of Ephesians dedicated to deepening the readers’ understanding of the
Gospel. If we desire to know Christ on a more intimate level it is crucial that
we spend time seeking Him in prayer.
Prayer and Meditation
1.
God
had always Christ’s salvation to reach both Jew and Gentile. However, He waited
until the perfect timing to reveal that the mystery of the Gospel was for
everyone, not just the Jews (vs 10). Worship God for His wisdom. Thank Him for
His perfect timing.
2.
Through
faith in Jesus we can boldly and confidently approach the Father (vs. 12). This
is such a privilege in light of His holiness. Ask God to give you more
understanding about this truth.
3.
God
has called us at Southland with the opportunity to connect with Christians in
various places in the world. Spend some time praying Ephesians 3:16-21 over the
Church in Uganda (specifically pray for Alex Mitala and his family, the pastors
he oversees and the children helped by Tupendane Africana).
