Prophet’s Reading Plan: Lamentations 3-5

Corporate Lament

Read: Psalm 90

Today’s Psalm is a prayer of Moses in response to some sort of affliction (vs. 15), probably due to the people’s sin.  It starts by acknowledging the greatness of God as a refuge, a dwelling-place and His attributes of being eternal and unchanging.  This is in direct contrast to men who are frail and will return to dust (vs. 3).  Our lifetime passes quickly, we are all aging.  We struggle, we sin, we sorrow, we die…depressing isn’t it?  Yet that’s not where the Psalm ends.  After making his conclusions about humanity, Moses asks that God will “teach us to number our days” which basically means to live each day with wisdom and pattern each day after the example of Christ and in a way that will bring glory to God.  Are you focused on your problems, trials or circumstances or are you focused on the Lord?   Moses prays for restoration to the Lord and that the people would be satisfied with His steadfast love (vs. 14).  He cries out for the Lord’s mercy and presence among the people.

Overview:
Verses 1-2: God eternal
Verses 3-6: Human life is brief and frail
Verses 7-11: Unfaithfulness
Verses 12-17: Help us, restore us

PRAYER AND MEDITATION
1.   Why does Moses pray, “Teach us to number our days”?  Why is this so important?
2.   In what way does this Psalm call believers to live?
3.   Ask the Lord to show you how you are doing in these areas.  Then ask Him to show you how you can grow so that your life would bring much good fruit into the Kingdom of God.
