Personal Lament

Read: Psalm 59

The title of this Psalm tells us that it was written by David when Saul sent men to David’s house to kill him and David escaped through the window (1 Sam. 19:11-12).  David’s life was being threatened and he was desperate for God’s protection.  David’s relief from the dangers around him was praising the Lord (vs. 16-17).    Instead of grumbling, complaining and feeling sorry for himself, David instead chose to remind himself of the strength, love and mercy of the Lord.  David knew that his security was not in his own strength but in the hands of God.  The book of Psalms contains more than 40 references to taking refuge in the Lord.  Each time David was confronted with life-threatening trouble, he centred his hope on the Lord.  God does not guarantee that trouble won’t come our way and He doesn’t guarantee that we won’t experience difficulty or physical harm but He does promise to be our refuge in every circumstance.

Overview:
Verses 1-10: A cry for deliverance
Verses 11-15: Prayer for judgment so all may know who God is
Verses 16-17: Praise to the Lord

PRAYER AND MEDITATION
1.   When you face trouble and trials, what are some of the ways you handle them?
2.   Do you ever find yourself struggling with grumbling and complaining?
3.   Take your complaints to the Lord, tell Him what is on your heart, He wants to be your refuge, the place where you go to get things off your chest.
4.   Ask the Lord to grow you on relying on Him in times of difficulty.
