Prophet’s Reading Plan: Ezekiel 5- 8

Repentant Lament

Read: Psalm 130

The writer of this Psalm is in despair over the guilt he is feeling about his sins.  Notice the language that he uses, he is in anguish and is making a plea for mercy (vs. 1-2).  The Psalmist’s cry is a beggar’s petition, he begs the Lord to lend an ear.  He knows the depth of his iniquity and that he cannot stand before the great King in his own righteousness. He is struck by the holiness of God and understands that this great King delights to forgive (vs. 3-4).  This is based on God’s great mercy, not on our own merit.   He waits on the Lord expecting Him to meet him in quietness for He is worth waiting for.  He was eager for the Lord to come, he hoped in the Lord (vs. 5-6).  Finally, he exhorts God’s people to trust in Him (vs. 7-8).   There is no redemption from iniquity without trusting in the Lord. What a blessing to be assured that with God there is redemption.  We are ultimately dependent on God’s mercy and grace.

Overview:
Verses 1-2: Misery over sin
Verses 3-4: A humble confession of repentance
Verses 5-6: Hope
Verses 7-8: Assurance and joyful expectation of redemption

PRAYER & MEDITATION
1.   Ask the Lord to grow in your heart the anguish over sin that is modelled to us in this Psalm.
2.   Ask the Lord to grow in you a deeper understanding of what God’s forgiveness means for you and what a precious gift it is.
3.   Ask the Lord to grow you in being thankful for His forgiveness; that you won’t take it forgranted but rather that this thankfulness will be evident by the way you live your life.
