Prophet’s Reading Plan: Ezekiel 24-26
Zion
Read: Psalm 122
There
are several Psalms that speak of Zion including Psalm 46, 48, 76, 87 and today’s
Psalm (122) which celebrates Zion as God’s chosen city. Zion is another name for Jerusalem. The Psalm begins by celebrating the arrival
of God’s people in the city of Jerusalem.
In the time of David, Israelites came to Jerusalem to worship at the
House of the Lord three times a year as part of three major festivals. They most likely sang the Psalms of ascent
(Psalms 120-134) as they made their way upward to the city of God. Psalm 122 describes their joyful anticipation
of being in God’s house and in Jerusalem.
The Psalm speaks of the beauty of Jerusalem followed by a prayer for the
peace of Jerusalem. In verse 8 the
Psalmist gives us two reasons for desiring peace in Jerusalem; first, for the
well- being of Jerusalem’s inhabitants and then for the continuation of the
Lord’s house as the proper place of worship.
Overview:
Verse 1-2: Joyful arrival in Jerusalem
