Prophet’s Reading Plan: Ezekiel 16

The Law (God’s Word)

Read: Psalm 119:1-40

This is the longest Psalm in the Bible, the theme of which is the Word of the Lord.  The psalmist didn’t view God’s Word as legalistic or harsh but rather loved it passionately.  He writes about the blessings of walking in the ways of the Lord.  The Bible is a perfect guide for life, it is filled with wisdom and doesn’t just teach us how to live but as we read it our hearts are connected to God’s and we begin to desire to want to live rightly.  This Psalm speaks of the Lord’s faithfulness and love and His eagerness to forgive when His people confess their sin.  The only response to this great love is to reproduce it in our own lives; to live in constant yearning for Him, trusting in Him and depending on Him.  The prayer of this Psalm is for all believers to share in this yearning.  Can you see how the writer was completely fixed upon God?  The way He pleads for understanding of God’s ways.  This was a person who had a soft heart toward the Lord.  The posture of his heart was one of humility and love for His Maker and the Word.  The Bible has been written by God for us so that we can know Him in a deep and profound way.

Overview:
Verses 1-8: The Word blesses
Verses 9-16: The Word cleanses
Verses 17-24: The Word removes reproach
Verses 25-32: The Word is truth
Verses 33-40: The Word is established

PRAYER AND MEDITATION
1.   What are the Psalmist’s yearnings that are evident in this Psalm?  How are these yearnings models for us?
2.   Ask the Lord to strengthen you to mediate on the Word, to fix your eyes on His ways and to delight in God’s commandments (vs. 15-16).
3.   Pray that the Lord would teach you His statutes, that you would understand His ways, that you would mediate on His wonderful works and be strengthened according to His Word (vs. 26-28).
